Fort Myers, North Fort Myers, Pine and Sanibel Islands
Set your RV sites on Fort Myers and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of this island-focused community. Settled in the 1800s during the Seminole Indian Wars of President Andrew Jackson, Fort Myers was the site of two forts and became a city in 1886. North Fort Myers is less resort-like with more residential development. Local history is rich with pirate lore and sunken Spanish galleons. Daytime summer temperatures hover in the high 90s, and southwestern Florida cools to 70s in the winter. Seasonal changes are subtle, with colorful azaleas, jasmine and citrus blossoms signaling spring.
Pine Island was saved from development, as it has no sandy beaches. “Old Florida” flavor permeates the island, where fishermen still make a living capturing crab, shrimp and fish. Spaniards found natives of the Calusa tribe living in this tradition as far back as the 1600s. Sport fishermen consider Pine Island one of the best fishing spots in the nation.
Sanibel Island is famous for sea shells, which wash up on the shore from far off southern seas. Historic Sanibel lighthouse still stands, and over twenty miles of bike paths on the island lead to the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge at Sanibel’s north end. The Dunes offers golf and tennis; shoppers can find many bargains at the Tanger Outlet Center, and restaurants serve delectable Florida seafood as well as burgers, fries, and of course, key lime pie. Treasure this RV vacation spot!
