Arcadia, Florida

Visiting Arcadia, Florida in your RV will give you a relaxing, slow-paced vacation. Settled by pioneers in the 1880s, Arcadia was named by a reverend for Arcadia Arbitton, the daughter of a parishioner. According to legend, the youth baked him a birthday cake. Located about 20 miles northeast of Charlotte Harbor, the town was burned to the ground on Thanksgiving Day, 1905 and took years to recover. Arcadia was also in the path of Hurricane Charley in 2004, and rebuilding is still underway as of this writing (9/2008). World War I and II pilots trained at the Carlstrom grass airfield. Nearby attractions include four RV resorts, several parks and a country club. Arcadia is the county seat for DeSoto County, named for Hernando DeSoto, the Spanish explorer who came to the area in search of gold. Arcadia hosts the annual county fair each January, complete with carnival and livestock shows. Spring and fall celebrations include pageants, rodeos, and a watermelon festival.
