The Bradenton-Sarasota area is an excellent choice for your RV vacation. Sarasota became a recognized Florida city in 1913, but has a rich history of native tribes and Conquistadors. Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto is reported to have first landed on the shores near Bradenton, Florida in 1539. Cuban and American fishermen were the first non-native inhabitants of the area in the 1700s. Attracted by the warm climate and plentiful sea life of protected Sarasota Bay, Europeans settled in what was called “Zara Zote” in the 1840s, establishing cattle ranches, and sugar and molasses plantations. Most modern growth in the area started in the 1970s, fueled by tourism and deep water shipping.
Among the famous names to call Sarasota home is Charles Ringling, memorialized at the Ringling Museum of Art. Golf courses abound in the twin cities, and Sarasota is the spring training ground for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. Sportsmen come to Sarasota Bay from near and far for fishing tournaments and boating. Other attractions include the Sarasota Jungle Gardens offering reptile and bird exhibits; the Selby Gardens boasting 6,000 varieties of orchids; the Sarasota Blues Festival, Medieval Festival, Comedy Festival and Wine Fest; and the Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix. There is more to do and see in Bradenton –Sarasota than you will have time for on your RV vacation here!
