Buying a used RV is a fun liberating experience but can also be intimidating to the average person. Here are some tips to prepare yourself.
First always go to a reputable RV dealer that backs up their products 100%. If you find a dealership you like, ask around and see what other RV’ers experience has been with them. Checking with the BBB for a their rating is also a great way to weed out the good guys from the bad.
When you start looking at RV’s don’t by shy. Ask questions, inspect the RV thoroughly top to bottom, don’t be afraid to get a ladder and climb on the roof, ask probing questions, and always test drive it.
When inspecting a RV keep your eye out for any wear and tear, especially water damage. One of the main reasons for major damage to RVs is water damage. Water damage can be spotted by extra sealant gobbed on window edges, corner moldings, vents, and other openings to the RV. Also flaking paint, a “spongie” feeling floor, drooping ceiling, and wall delamination are obvious signs of water damage.
All systems should be tested and checked for any defects. This includes all electrical systems including lights, outlets, chargers, inverters, generators, ect. Any electrical devices should also be checked: TV, stereo, lights (interior & exterior), and any appliance.
Water systems should be ran and tested for leaks. This includes water lines, taps, traps, fresh water tank, water pump, gray and black water tank and slide valve.
All interior mechanics, window seals, drawers, appliances, vents, should be checked.Don’t forget slide outs and storage areas.
