Inside Charlotte County - December 2008
A Recreational Vehicle Resource in Southwest Florida
RVing is extremely popular in Southwest Florida. Charlotte
County and DeSoto County have the largest per
capita population of RVs of any two counties in Florida.
Charlotte County has the largest per capita population of
motorhomes among the large counties in Florida. Many of our local
residents have an RV to travel to sporting events, visit family and
friends, or to have a place to stay while on a job assignment such
as nursing, construction or engineering. And, of course, Southwest
Florida is a popular destination for RVing snowbirds because of the
abundance of nice RV resorts in the area.
Amos Slater, a resident of Punta Gorda, developed the Charlotte RV
Center at the corner of US 41 and Kings Highway in Port Charlotte
beginning spring 2004. Servicing RVs is a natural extension of his 36-
years’ experience in the motorcoach business in Detroit, Michigan.
“Before I opened Charlotte RV, you had to go to Tampa to find a fullservice
RV facility comparable to ours,” he says. “Now, the largest dedicated
RV service facility in Florida is right here in Port Charlotte!”
Charlotte RV’s service and repair business quickly expanded to include
sales of pre-owned RVs of all types and price ranges. Typically,
about 100 RVs are available to chose from, and Amos’ goal is to offer
a selection of nearly 200 units. Financing, trade-ins and extended
warranty contracts are offered. Those looking to upsize or downsize,
as well as those folks who are new to the RV lifestyle, have their
choice of Class A, B and C motor homes, travel trailers, folding
campers, fifth wheel trailers and expandable travel trailers.
Charlotte RV added the Chalet folding camper product line a year
ago, and last month added another line of collapsible travel trailers.
“These RVs take just an extra gallon of gas to travel 100 miles,” explains
Amos. “Yet they offer full showers, bathroom, and kitchen
facilities. Best of all, no canvas! These lightweight trailers are ideal
for towing behind the family minivan or the smaller 6-cylinder SUVs
and compact pickup trucks. A person doesn’t have to own a huge
pickup truck to tow a travel trailer anymore.”
Those looking to sell their own RV can utilize Charlotte RV’s consignment
services, which include thousands of web links and access
to print, radio and television advertisements, as well as display space
on US 41.
There is also an extensive parts and accessories store, with hundreds
of unique products on site and catalogs supplying thousands more.
And Charlotte RV boasts a full service department, able to handle
any major or minor repairs. There is even a full body department,
with the latest technology in eco-friendly painting, in the controlled
atmosphere of a 56-foot paint spray booth. Everything from minor
collisions to full custom paint comes out looking fabulous. Insurance
claims for water damage, wind damage, lightning strikes, collision
and all other perils are handled quickly and professionally at
Charlotte RV.
With a staff of 26 people, “There is not an aspect of RVs that is not
handled here,” says Amos.
Charlotte RV Service & Sales is located at 23180 Harper
